Introductions - please post.

I know a lot of yall already know each other, but I don't know that many people on here. Figured we could use an intro thread.

I'm Amber. I'm 23, live in Norfolk. I guess technically I'm a freelance graphic designer but right now I put in 40 hours a week as a contractor for Norfolk Southern (in-house design for their PR dept).

On the side I do a lot of work for local bands (posters, flyers, shirts, websites plus I book shows) and I'll do work for the odd small business from time to time if they have something I want to trade for. I also help a friend of mine run a record label (Last Anthem Records). We put out punk & hardcore records.

Other than that I'm into mid-century modern furniture, knitting, graffiti, thrifting/yard sales, DIY projects for my house, and my Boston Terrier, Kyla. The link in my sig is for my blog, where I talk about that stuff all too often.

Ok your turn. Who are you people?

Re: Introductions - please post.

Um, my name is Lizzel, I'm 24, originally from Philly. I'm a amateur designer for Trader Publishing, soon to be Dominion Enterprises(we got sliced in half). I'm 'betrothed' to Stuntkid, also on here. I take my painting more seriously than my day job, so overall I'm a painter/mixed media artist/web designer.
I dig on plants/eco consumer responsibility/animal rights/history(do not get to read enough, not at all!)/cartoons/art collecting/home made remedy-ing...et cetera. I'm also working on a childrens book, trying!

Re: Introductions - please post.

I'm Eric. I'm older. I live in Ghent. People say I look like Bruce Lee. I sometimes believe them. Some say I look Mexican. I tell them to run. Did a lot of event production and music promotion (Virgin and Capital Records, Rawkus Records, Cornerstone Promotion/The FADER Magazine) while attending school at Old Dominion where I studied to become a graphic designer and marketeer. After spending a year and a half doing all of the print work at Hampton University and buidling sites on the side, Drew came and rescued me and brought me to Grow!

In my spare time, I run a personal blog called Ending East. There, I simply post things that interest me. I also use it as a tool to promote the out-of-town, up-and-coming bands I bring to Norfolk. All of which, play the best record store on the planet: Relative Theory Records.

Re: Introductions - please post.

I'm Doug.  And although I do a lot of things, I'm most notable for drawing and illustration.  I work for myself and tend not to sleep much.  I did some time up in Richmond where I got my BFA at VCU.  Afterwards, I got sucked into the web and developed a love/hate relationship with it.  Having seen the "light" in 2004, I converted back to being a Mac user again.  Wacom is my buddy, although I have commitment issues and still mess around with pencils, brushes, canvas and paint.  When I'm not trying get my work out to the masses, you might find me surfing or skating.

And like Eric, I also have a blog, The Sketch Book Diaries.

Re: Introductions - please post.

I'm Joel and I like this post.

I live in Richmond, where I run The Drama... which is basically a quarterly contemporary art magazine, an online store, and an occasional gallery show somewhere. I am baffled that I am still doing this.

I also run Forest, which is my design company, where I mostly make websites and the occasional logo and print work.

Myself and The Drama would be nowhere without the help of Drew, who gave me my first real design job and also turned The Drama into something succesful.

hello my name is travis.
I’m not in the tidewater area, but I love forums and the chance to be opinionated.
I like to talk to Joel about The Drama, and draw comics and make screenprints and sell things, all while serving food to the underfed and privileged (not a like).
that's that.

Re: Introductions - please post.

Hey folks. Leon here. Found out about this through Amber. See some familiar names in the forums. Good to see folks stuck around and putting it down here in the Tidewater area.

Was a photographer for Norfolk Southern for about 4 years. Now I'm doing the same for a high end jewelry store / fine arts gallery in VB. Do some freelance photoshop retouching and editing for a local photographer. Also do photography for Sole Brother, a local skateshop in Ghent.

Interests run the whole gamut. Into film (Jim Jarmusch, Hal Hartley, Wes Anderson, etc.), music (hip hop, Brazilian, weirdo British bands, I'm basically a Gilles Peterson wannabe), design, photo, tech, blah blah blah. You know you're stereotypical "creative type" interests while thinking I'm actually different (yeah right).

Glad to see this forum come to fruition and hope we all can benefit from it.

Re: Introductions - please post.

I'm another Eric separate from the other Eric, I reside in Norfolk, have a blah design job in VB doing print design for travel and leisure guides (gotta hold it down and pay the billz). To keep sane from my day job I'm slinging a local skateboard company that I started with Grow Joe. My wife Sarah is also a designer and is employed with The Pilot. The rest of the family includes two crazy cats and one goldfish that spends most of his time swimming upside down. We're expecting a baby girl in July.

Pleased to meet yall.

Re: Introductions - please post.

my name is don spencer and I am more of a print designer although i want to learn more about website design, film and animation. i graduated odu a while back 92 with a bfa -so i am the old guy. i use to attend the tidewater society of communication arts-which was pretty cool but i really love what you guys are doing here-inspiration for the creatives. we just had a baby boy-jack reed spencer which kind of changed my focus for a while-he is the greatest thing to happen to me and Debbie (my other half). when I am not wiping spit up off my clothes I like to keep up with good design by checking out commarts.com and other cool sites and i surf in hatteras when i can. i found out about this thru my friend at work the other eric,

Re: Introductions - please post.

I am the first Seth on the site. Learned about this site through destroyeric- I worked with Eric and Don at Vista for a couple years. Couldn't handle the cubicle or Don's constant sexual harrassment (jk) and moved out to Ghent where I hope to start the ODU MFA program this fall. In the meantime I am really trying to find a way to get my illustrations/paintings on display in Norfolk and beyond- even looking into the business of selling the giclee prints- hopefully I can find help through here.

Really Really inspired by a lot of the work I have seen through this site.

Re: Introductions - please post.

Hello, my name is Benjamin a.k.a. “b”… mr.b to you young guns. I know most of you through 6 degrees of separation and while I am no longer in Tidewater I still communicate daily with the home grown types still there. I’d like to think of myself as the older sibling to Drew, handing off a once bright torch to him, encouraging collaboration amongst the locals in an effort to better themselves and their hometown.

I grew up in V.B., graduated from VCU with a BFA in Comm Arts. along side Doug and got into Flash 3 on day 1. I held it down in V.B. for 7 years and I’ve worked for just about every place there outside Pilot and Trader (although I freelanced once for Pilot Interactive). I managed to work for a few years remotely for places like Firstborn in NYC and teach Flash on the east coast while freelancing later. I founded Open in 2k and finally had to make the call and skip town to take a job in Florida at EA Sports to support the family and see what I could do. Florida was great, EA wasn’t and the family and I relocated in NOVA last summer for a spot at AOL.

I’m involved with all things Flash, I’m married with children, skated for 15 years, love but don’t get to go snowboarding, love Ron in a manly way and tipped the big “3” “0” just a bit back. I’m a God damn NASCAR fan no thanks to EA and I aspire to learn to play the guitar and speak a second language before I die. I also own a 1/2 million dollar townhouse in Ashburn because NOVA FREAKIN SUCKS ASS. The future is bright and if I were you I wouldn’t be surprised to see me back in town again to be closer to family.

Re: Introductions - please post.

hi. graphic design and animation is what i do. i once lived in hampton roads (ghent). i rode my bike daily to work at a small studio thats ironically close to where grow is now located. my desires for growth became too big for what the area could provide so i moved to brooklyn where i worked full-time and did freelance with various studios and companies until i was offerred a job in los angeles. so thats where i am now.

i helped b with open back in the day and i miss the smell of his cologne after work.

the drama is a neat little periodical that i've assisted since day one. hi joel!

i'm way too busy for my own good and my own site is unbearably dusty. one day i'll get around to updating it with work and such.

most of the people on the forum i know or somehow i probably know you through so-and-so, but if i don't, hi! although i don't live there anymore my heart is still with you guys and hope that pretty tasty gets eaten up by the locals and non locals alike. way to grow! um go! hi drew, joe, eric...and  crew.

keep rock'n.....ron

Re: Introductions - please post.

Hey there. big_smile

I'm Elliott, a 20 year old student and resident of Old Dominion.  I'm pretty sure you haven't met me unless your name's Drew or Eric, however you might know my mom, Carla Peay, President of HR's AIGA chapter.

As for me, I eat, sleep, and breathe code.  The method to my madness is always the same (i.e. it's 3:30AM), but the drug always changes.  I've been taught C++, and taught myself the frontend HTML and CSS as well as the backend PHP/mySQL of the web, geeks are just curious like that.  Got a little flash under my belt, but I can't hold much of a candle to some of the things I've seen done with flash lately.  Maybe a zippo then, I don't know...

When I'm not tracing loops, I'm a DJ.  I spent my weekends last summer DJing aboard the American Rover, that big ol wooden cruise boat next to waterside.  If things go according you plan, you can find me on the Spirit of Norfolk this summer.

It's a pleasure to meet all these interesting people and I look forward to helping this community grow.

Re: Introductions - please post.

Hi, I'm Joe. I live in Suffolk and work in Norfolk at Grow Interactive.

I kinda got a late start in graphic design. I was in drawing classes at TCC visual arts center with Eric (destroyeric) back about 6 or 7 years ago when we both were first getting started in graphic design. We goofed off a lot. Shortly after starting at TCC I took an internship at the addison group which I think really helped me out a lot at the time. I transfered over to ODU but never finished(but very close) because I took a full time job at drewmedia studios which is now grow interactive. I was lucky to get a job doing interactive work because at the time I had little real interactive design experience. (Thanks Drew!) I've really enjoyed working there a lot.

Other than design I enjoy hanging out with my girlfriend, family and friends. I have a cool little dog named Gizmo. I enjoy seeing films and listening to music. I've skateboarded since I was 6yrs old but I think my interest for design has taken its place over the past couple years sadly enough. I still enjoy the occasional mini ramp though.

I look forward to this message board becoming something that everyone can contribute to and benefit from in some way.

Re: Introductions - please post.

I'm Rich Lee, and I left Virginia almost a year ago.  I miss the folks there, and the water, but that's about it!  The traffic, the house prices, and the job pool I don't miss :)

Hrm background.  I went to Columbus College of Art and Design up in Ohio, graduated 1996.  Since then I had a number of small jobs and one big one... It started as Automark and turned into Reynolds and Reynolds, and further split off into Boatventures which is now Channel Blade.

That job had its ups and downs for sure, but was good experience across the board, and I made some FFL (friends fo life) there which is never a bad thing.

Now I'm with a small (5 folks) company in Knoxville and we crank out slick websites and multimedia for small corps and big media personas... The highlight for me is getting to dig in and get my learn on re: video.. shooting, setting up shoots, post, and delivery... granted i still do all the design stuff I used to, but this is new to me and thus fun!

Also getting back into the fine arts saddle again this last couple years and really enjoying it... had my first show in November and another coming up soon.   www.anthological.com is my art blog and is usually fairly up to date with my current pieces/progress.

Hope to visit ya'll soon!

Re: Introductions - please post.

Hello!  I am Archie Lee Coates 4, born and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  I am 21 years old.  I am a freelance graphic designer, soon to move to Richmond, Virginia to play constant ping pong (and beat) my friends Joel, Travis, and GYLo.  I enjoy writing fake pop songs ( http://www.purevolume.com/theendoftheworlddanceparty ).  I need to start excercising again, and I also want one of those Razr phones.  Nah mean?  Also, I am about to graduate from Virginia Polytechnic State Institute and University, and I am currently sitting in a class titled "Intermediate Graphic Design Part 2," where with 5 weeks left of school, our professor has just informed us that there is a difference between "Serif" and "Sans Serif" typefaces.  Except he called them "Serif", and "Sons."  Note the difference.  With my now expansive knowledge of typography, I feel I am ready for the world of graphic design.  Enjoy the day!

I like to draw, read comics, tinker on my computer, play Soul Calibur when I'm frustrated.  I like learning as long as it keeps the gears in my mind turning. Oh, I also like to eat. A lot. I'm Matt. I was born in Denver, CO where I was spirited away to a lovely town called Houston. I went to UT Austin and studied advertising. I also studied how to make my face look like a turtle. I love and miss Austin, but I think Hampton Roads has a lot to offer. I work at Grow Interactive as a designer. You can visit my blog which has dumb stuff on it at MCTB

Re: Introductions - please post.

Hi everyone.. hope I'm not too late to the party here. I'm paul. I'm a graphic/web/photography/video producer for a wireless internet company in Va Beach. A person who just met me once said I look like a 'well showered ethan hawke', which I thought was clever and flattering. I just moved from Ghent to Port Norfolk after buying my first home there. I play drums and have a girlfriend who is a jazz singer (sonya lorelle, google her and check her out). I've been pretty holed up in my job as a lone web department guy, and would like to meet others of our kind so maybe this is the place to connect. Good to know this exists. best to you all, paul.

Hey everyone...my name is Jeff.  I do in-house I.T./Database Administration/Web Design/Web Programming/Print Consultation/Everything-Under-The-Sun at Armada Hoffler in the Virginia Beach Town Center Tower.  Nice digs around here with the office and nightlife and whatnot but I'm ready to ditch I.T. to chase the dream of working in a more creative environment.

Graduated from JMU with a Computer Science degree in '04.  Had a hell of a good college experience.  I live in a house Virginia Beach with two of my best friends from back in the day, but getting ready to buy a condo for the first time.  Big on sports and music (especially with how good the live music scene in Norfolk has gotten fairly recently).  Recently started attending AIGA meetings; it's good to know that kind of community is so active here.

Hope this site takes off, it looks awesome so far.

Hey folks. I'm Guillermo, designer/writer/developer. Used to work at Trader Publishing, currently work at Harris Connect, Inc. as a Programmer Analyst. I'm 26, originally from Brooklyn, and now live in Chesapeake with my wife and 2 kids.

Went to MIT, didn't graduate. Got into graphic design in '97, did some freelancing, had a few gigs, decided I couldn't work in a place that wouldn't let me do what I wanted to do, thought I could make a good living programming full-time and doing the artistic stuff on the side. So far, so good.

I've been here for two years... I've even worked with people in this forum and didn't know anything like this even existed. I'd like to get to know everyone... feel free to get at me.
